What's Happening Now?

You may have heard of Twitter, but do you know exactly what it is? Watch the following video.

As the video mentioned, Twitter is a way to connect with friends. In the next assignment, we're going to have you create your own Twitter account. But before we have you sign up for an account, there are a few things you should know.

Twitter Etiquette

Like any new social medium, Twitter has an etiquette. Although Twitter is to fill friends in on your normal day-to-day activities, remember that if it’s not interesting people may stop following you. Consider the following tweets.

  • I’m brushing my teeth.
  • I’m doing homework.
  • I’m watching TV.

You probably wouldn’t want to follow somebody who tweeted these things. Now consider these tweets.

  • This new toothpaste tastes like lima beans
  • I’m stuck on assignment #3, any fellow students want to collaborate?
  • I love Gilligan’s Island! It’s the one where Skipper eats his hat.

These tweets are a bit more descriptive, and are interesting. It’s always important to remember who your followers are.

Another important feature of twitter is the hash tag, also known as the # sign. If you want to talk about a specific thing, you include the hash tag related to that. For example, when people talk about Utah Politics, they write #utpol. Anybody who wants to follow Utah Politics can do a search for #utpol in Twitter, and see what people are saying.

Twitter Safety

Twitter is not any more dangerous than being on the internet in general. If you follow simple guidelines that you are already familiar with, you will have nothing to worry about.

Twitter is different from many other online social sites. With most social sites, you have a group of friends, and they are the only ones who can see what you do. With Twitter, it is all wide open. Even though you may follow somebody, or they may follow you, anybody can see your tweets.

Because of this, you should never give out personal information on Twitter. Things such as your address, your phone number, or even the city where you live are things you should never share on Twitter. Also, just because somebody follow you, does not mean you have to follow them back. If you don’t know who the other person is, you may not want to follow them. You may also block users on Twitter. This will keep them from seeing your updates. In fact, we strongly recommend that if your parents don't have twitter, that they sign up for it too and they can follow your tweets.

Two other things to remember. If you want to write a message to somebody, there are two ways to do it. The first is to write the @ symbol, followed by their username first. So if you were to write to Bill Gates, you would write @billgates. The only people who would see that message are other people who follow Bill Gates. However, if you wanted to write a note that only Bill Gates could see, you would type d @billgates. This is a direct message, and only Bill will see it.

6. Set your device to 'on.'

7. Be sure to turn off your updates while you sleep.

The Purpose of #Hashtags

Hashtags are a way of allowing everyone to see any tweets on a given topic. Open High School has its own hashtag. When teachers or students are excited or proud about something that is going on at OHSU, we tweet our comment along with #openhs. For the OHSU fieldtrips, we ask that Open High School students use the hashtag #openhsft so their tweets can be shared with people following the field trip.

When you tweet with a hashtag it is important to remember you are representing that subject. Twitter is a marketing tool. It is a way to get your name out there and to introduce your brand to other people. So when you tweet please be appropriate.

Set up TweetDeck to follow a Twitter Feed

To follow a Twitter feed, you will need to create a search column inTweet Deck. You can create one by clicking on the + sign next to where you compose tweets.

Next, create a search for our twitter feed typing in a hashtag (for example #openhs)

You will be able to see all tweet that contain that hashtag, allowing you to follow a topic in real time.
