The Modern Prometheus

The original (1818) title page of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was subtitled The Modern Prometheus. Victor Frankenstein has been said to have “Promethean Ambition” or the desire to strive beyond mortal ambition into the realm of deity. Their desires usually bringing about treacherous results.

Prometheus was a Titan who made Zeus angry by stealing and introducing fire to humans. Prometheus was punished eternally (or at least for a while until his mother shares a prophecy with Zeus) by having his liver eaten away by a great eagle daily.
