Frankenstein Background Project

This is a preview of the project that you will be working on this week. Please read though this assignment and decide if you would like to work with someone in the class or on your own. You may work by yourself or in groups of two or three. Choose a topic from the list below.

For this project you will be helping our class by researching and producing a short multi-media presentation on a topic that was relevant to the the 18-century or a topic that links our modern culture to Frankenstein.
TOPICS:
(1) What is Galvanism and how does it relate to Frankenstein?
(2) Explore body snatching in the 1800's--theft of bodies from graves for the purpose of sale to doctors and scientists.
(3) Who was Theophatus Bombastus Von Honenheim? What is he known for? How does he or his discoveries relate to Frankenstein?
(3) What is laudanum? What does it have to do with the writers and artists of the 18-century?
(4) Explore the numerous polar expeditions in the 1800's. What drove them? What were they hoping to discover?
(5) Lord Byron--who was he? What kind of writer was he? How was he affiliated with Mary and Percy Shelley? Was he an influence on Mary Shelley? How?
(6) Mary Wollstonecraft--who was she? What did she believe? What did she write? How was she influential?
(7) Explore vivisection in the 1800's. What were they? How were they influential to Mary Shelly's novel?
(8) Explore Percy Shelley. Who was he? What did he believe? How was he influential?
(9) Explore William Goodwin. Who was he? What did he believe? What did he write? Was he influential? How?
(10) Explore Dr. Erasmus Darwin. Who was he? What were his discoveries? Did his work influence Mary Shelley? How?
(11) Explore the Human Genome Project. What is it? What is trying to be accomplished? How does this project tie into Mary Shelley's book?
(12) Discuss and explore the Visible Human Project. What is it? What is trying to be accomplished? How could this project tie into Mary Shelly's book?
(13) Who is Dolly the Sheep? What does she have to do with Mary Shelley's novel?
(14) Help give us some information about the setting of Mary Shelley's novel by researching the Alps. What do they look like? Where are they located? Address why you think that the author set her story amid these mountains?
(15) Explore modern day genetic engineering. What is it? How might it relate to Mary Shelly's novel?
(16) Help give us some information about the setting of Mary Shelley's novel by researching The Orkney Isles. Where are they located? What do they look like? Address why you think that the author set her story (in part) in these islands?
(17) Briefly research and discuss the role of women in Mary Shelley's era (1800's). Did they have limitations? How were they viewed? Does Mary Shelley fit this view?
(18) Explore the study of natural philosophy? What it is? How does it relate to the novel?

ASSIGNMENT:

step 1: Contact your partners. You may choose to complete this assignment in a group (of two or three) or by yourself.

step 2: Decide on a topic.

step 3: Submit your topic.

step 4: Work with your partner(s) and research your topic. Note any sources that you use.
step 5: Decide how to present your information. You may use any multi-media format that you desire: You Tube video, Slide rocket, Audacity, Voice thread, power point, Presi, etc. If you deviate from this list, please check in with me for approval before you begin your project.

step 6:
Make sure that your project includes:
  • an answer to the question posed (see topic)
  • at least one visual to help us understand your topic
  • use of multi-media (of your choice) to inform us of your chosen topic
  • presentation should be 2-5 minutes in length
step 7: Do your best work and turn project in on time!
