The mission statement of Open High School of Utah emphasizes 21st century technology, flexibility and personal responsibility.
My job, as your Public Speaking, teacher is to provide top quality, individualized instruction. Your job, as a student, is to take personal responsibility in your education. The following policies will help both of us to do our jobs effectively.
LATE WORK POLICY. All of your work for the current week is due the following MONDAY. (Example, you will start this quarter on January 23. The hard deadline for work from that week is Monday, January 30). You are STRONGLY encouraged to complete your work for the week, during that week. If you allow yourself to complete your work from the previous week on the deadline Monday, you will ALWAYS be playing catch up! This makes the course more stressful for you, and does not allow you the time needed to do top quality work.
That being said, as a teacher, I do realize that sometimes things come up. We all have circumstances that are sometimes beyond our control. Therefore, late work will be accepted UP TO ONE WEEK LATE FOR HALF CREDIT. This means, that if on assignment you would earn 12/15 points, you will only receive 6/15 points because the work is late. Late work, like all work, has a hard deadline of the following Monday. (Example, Deadline for on time work for the first week of school is September 6. Deadline for LATE work, for HALF credit would be Monday, September 12). Work that is turned in beyond the late work deadline will NOT receive credit.
If it is a TRUE emergency, you are welcome to contact me in a TIMELY manner to discuss deadlines and options. What is a timely manner? Emailing me Monday night at 11:57 PM, is NOT considered timely, or demonstrating personal responsibility. This work would still be considered late.
Throughout the course you will be doing written assignments, it is important that you understand Plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else's original words and / or ideas and presenting them as your own. Anytime you use or "borrow" someone else's words or ideas, and do not give credit to that person, you are committing plagiarism. Plagiarism is not only a violation of US copy right law, it is against policy at Open High School of Utah, and as such is completely unacceptable.
Etiquette Policy (i.e., proper manners). As you are working in this course, please keep your choice of topics language appropriate and PG rated. This course will require you to demonstrate knowledge in a variety of ways, it is very important that you use proper grammar, manners and language. Open High School of Utah is unique, and also requires that students know, understand and practice online "netiquette."
1) Avoid "text" speak, LOL, ICW, BFF, and IDK, are not appropriate forms of communication in this class.
2) Address the person you would like to speak to at the beginning of the message. For example:
Mrs. Bray,
Do you have time to help me with the assignment that is due next week?
Alice
3) Use correct grammar, complete sentences and punctuation in messages, assignments and forums.
4) Be polite and positive when participating in forums and writing messages. Treat your peers and your teacher with respect.
5) Avoid using all CAPITAL LETTERS and excessive exclamation marks!!! in your writing, as this is considered "yelling" in the online world.
6) This is an online classroom, but it is still a classroom, and as such is subject to the same courtesies of a "regular" classroom. Any comments or behaviors that would be inappropriate in "traditional" classroom are likely to be inappropriate in this classroom.
7) Be aware that one of the unique features of an online high school, is that a majority of our communication happens in written form. It is easy for text to be misinterpreted because we cannot see the facial expressions of the writer. Make sure that you are clear in your communications and think carefully about your comments / messages (proofread!) before posting or clicking the send button.
Office Hours / Contact Information. Contact information and office hours are posted at the beginning of the course room. You are always welcome to contact me, if I happen to be unavailable or with another student, I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Here's to a great third quarter!!
